What is a self-employed UTR number – and why you need one

What is a UTR number?

A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number is a 10-digit code issued by HMRC.

Once you’re registered as self-employed, HMRC will send your UTR by post, usually within 10 working days (or 21 if you’re abroad).

  • HMRC letters about your Self Assessment

  • Previous tax returns

Why do you need a UTR number?

If you’re self-employed in the UK, you must have a UTR number to:

  • File your Self Assessment tax return each year

  • Work with certain clients or agencies (especially in construction under CIS)
  • Apply for a mortgage or loan, since lenders may need proof of your earnings

How to get a self-employed UTR number

When should you apply for a UTR number?

You should register for a UTR number as soon as you start working for yourself whether as a freelancer, contractor, or small business owner.

HMRC’s rule is that you must register by 5th October following the end of the tax year when you became self-employed.
