Submitting your Self-Assessment tax return doesn’t have to be a stressful or time-consuming task — especially when you know what’s involved and how to prepare. At Tax2U, we aim to simplify the process and help you submit your return as quickly and smoothly as possible.
So, How Long Does It Actually Take?
If you’re using Tax2U, we can draft your return within 48 hours — provided we have everything we need from you. From there, the full process may take a little longer depending on a few factors, such as whether you’re already linked to our HMRC agent account.
Let’s break it down step by step.
Step 1: Provide Your Income & Expenses
To get started, you’ll need to submit all relevant information for the tax year:
Tax Year: 6th April 2022 – 5th April 2023
What we need:
- Income from employment, self-employment, or CIS
- Expenses and receipts
- Any other income (e.g. rental, dividends, interest)
You can upload your income and expenses directly from our Self-Assessment Tax Return platform once you have selected a service or email them to our support team.
Once received, we’ll confirm the information with you before we begin drafting.
Step 2: Drafting Your Return (48 Hours)
After confirmation, our team will prepare your tax return through our Self-Assessment Tax Return service within 48 working hours. You’ll receive an email to review everything and approve it digitally.
This is where our service saves you time — no need for spreadsheets, calculators, or confusing HMRC forms.
Step 3: HMRC Agent Authorisation
To submit your return on your behalf, we need to be registered as your agent with HMRC. Here’s how it works:
- If you’re already linked to our HMRC agent account, we can proceed immediately.
- To authorise us as your HMRC agent, you’ll need a valid Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). If you haven’t registered yet, you can apply for your UTR number today to avoid delays. HMRC will post an authorisation code to your home address (this usually takes 5–10 working days).
- Once you receive the code, simply send it to us. We’ll activate the link and proceed with submission.
Not sure if you’re linked to us already? Our team will check for you as part of the process.
Step 4: Submission to HMRC
Once you’ve reviewed and approved your return, and you’re linked to our agent account, we’ll submit it to HMRC for you.
Once you’ve reviewed and approved your return, we’ll submit your Self-Assessment tax return directly to HMRC. Remember, missing the deadline can lead to penalties for late Self Assessment.
HMRC Processing Time: Typically 2–3 weeks
You’ll receive confirmation from both us and HMRC once it’s been processed.
