Getting your Self-Assessment Tax Return right starts with having the right paperwork ready. Whether you’re self-employed, working under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), or earning additional income, providing the correct information helps us prepare and submit your return accurately — and on time.
At Tax2U, we make the process easy. Here’s exactly what you need to get started.
What You Need to Submit a Self-Assessment Tax Return
To complete your return, you’ll need to share all relevant documents and information for the tax year, which runs from:
6 April to 5 April the following year
Here’s what you’ll need to send:
1. Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR)
A 10-digit number issued by HMRC when you register for Self-Assessment.
If you work in construction, your CIS number is also helpful.
Don’t have a UTR yet? Start your UTR application with Tax2U.
2. Your Contact Information
Please confirm your:
- Current email address
- Phone number
- Most recent home address
This ensures we can stay in touch and match your details with HMRC’s records.
3. Income Records
To correctly report your income, we’ll need:
- CIS payslips, monthly statements, or invoices (if applicable)
- P45/P60 forms if you were also employed and paid via PAYE
- Bank statements, if we’re calculating income from incoming payments (let us know who paid you)
Not sure what qualifies as income? Our team can help review your documents.
4. Proof of Identity
To meet HMRC and Anti-Money Laundering regulations, we require:
- A valid photo ID (Full Driving Licence or Passport) Provisional licences are not accepted
- A photo of you holding your ID
- A recent proof of address (within the last 3 months), such as:
- A bank statement
- A letter from HMRC
How to Send Your Documents
You can provide your documents in one of two ways:
- By Email: Send your files to [email protected]
- Upload via Dashboard: Use our secure Online Dashboard to upload everything in one place.
Want to Claim Work-Related Expenses?
You may be able to reduce your tax bill by claiming eligible expenses. These include:
- Tools and equipment
- Travel costs
- Uniforms or protective clothing
- Mobile phone or internet used for work
We can calculate these for you — just send over receipts or transactions and note what they’re for. More info is available on our CIS Tax Rebate page.
Don’t Miss the Deadline
The deadline to submit your Self-Assessment tax return is:
31 January each year (for the tax year that ended the previous 5 April)
Late submissions can result in automatic £100 fines, plus additional penalties if delayed further. The sooner you submit your documents, the better.
