How to appeal a Self Assessment penalty – 3 essential tips

If you’ve received a penalty from HMRC for missing the Self Assessment deadline, don’t panic. Many taxpayers successfully appeal penalties every year. But you need to follow the right process and respond quickly.

This guide walks you through how to give yourself the best chance of a successful appeal.

Tip 1: Act Quickly

HMRC usually gives you 30 days from the date of the penalty notice to appeal. If you miss this window, your appeal may not be accepted.

Tip 2: Show a Reasonable Excuse

HMRC recognises certain events as valid reasons for missing a deadline. These include:

  • Serious illness or bereavement
  • Fire, flood, or theft
  • Computer issues or platform downtime
  • Unexpected postal delays

Avoid reasons like “I forgot” or “I didn’t realise I had to file.”

Tip 3: Submit Evidence with Your Appeal

Make your case stronger by attaching relevant documentation:

  • Doctor’s notes or hospital records
  • Screenshots showing HMRC downtime
  • Copies of letters or incident reports

You can appeal online via your Government Gateway or use a paper form (SA370).

What Happens If You Don’t Appeal?

  • The penalty stands
  • Further interest or charges may apply
  • It could affect your ability to defer payments or apply for payment plans

At Tax2U, we help customers with penalty appeals every year. Contact us for support or let us manage it on your behalf.
