How Long Does It Take to Get a UTR Number?

When you register for Self Assessment, HMRC issues you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). One of the first things people want to know is how quickly it arrives — especially if you work in construction and need it for CIS deductions.

The short answer: Most UTRs arrive within 10–14 days, but the exact timing depends on how and when you apply, and whether HMRC needs any additional information.

If you want to get started straight away, you can submit your UTR application through Tax2u, and we’ll ensure everything is completed correctly and handled by HMRC without delay.

Typical Processing Times

Online applications

  • Usually 10 to 14 days
  • Faster than paper forms because HMRC processes them automatically
  • Ideal if you need your UTR quickly for Self Assessment or CIS

Postal applications (SA1 form)

  • Around 3 weeks or longer
  • Extra time needed for manual data entry and verification

Seasonal delays

  • January (Self Assessment deadline)
  • April (new tax year)

During these busy periods, it’s common for the wait to stretch to 3–4 weeks.

And importantly: HMRC never emails UTR numbers they are always posted to your registered address for security.

Why Some Applications Take Longer

Most delays come from simple, avoidable mistakes:

  • Incorrect National Insurance number
  • Missing or wrong start date of self-employment
  • Out-of-date address with HMRC
  • Mismatched personal details
  • Applying during peak periods

If HMRC has to write back for clarification, it can add weeks to the timeline. This is one of the main reasons people choose Tax2u, we make sure everything is correct the first time and handle HMRC on your behalf.

Why Timing Matters for CIS Subcontractors

If you work in the construction industry, delays don’t just slow you down — they cost you money.

Until your UTR is issued and your CIS status is verified:

  • Contractors must legally deduct 30% tax, not 20%
  • That means on a £2,000 invoice, you’d lose £600 instead of £400
  • You can only reclaim the difference later through Self Assessment

A one-month UTR delay can mean hundreds of pounds withheld unnecessarily. Applying early avoids this problem and ensures you’re taxed at the correct CIS rate.

If your UTR hasn’t arrived yet

If more than three weeks have passed:

  1. Check your post carefully – HMRC letters look like standard mail
  2. Log into your HMRC account, your UTR sometimes appears there before the physical letter
  3. Contact HMRC Self Assessment helpline and request an update

If you’d prefer not to chase HMRC yourself, Tax2u can manage the entire process for you.

Can you start working without a UTR?

Yes, you can begin trading or take on work, but HMRC expects you to apply for a UTR as soon as possible.

For construction workers, this is especially urgent:

  • No UTR = 30% CIS deductions
  • With UTR = 20% standard deduction

The faster your UTR is issued, the sooner you can move onto correct CIS registration and increase your take-home pay.

Avoiding mistakes that slow you down

These small steps make a big difference:

  • Double-check your NI number
  • Make sure your HMRC address is current
  • Confirm your correct start date of self-employment
  • Avoid applying at peak times if possible
  • Submit through a service (like Tax2u) that checks the details first

For subcontractors, avoiding mistakes doesn’t just speed things up, it prevents unnecessary overpayments.
