Making Tax Digital Explained

What is MTD for Self Assessment?

Making Tax Digital for Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) is HMRC's new system that replaces the once-a-year Self Assessment tax return. Instead of filing everything in January, you'll submit a digital summary of your income and expenses to HMRC four times per year using compatible software.

At the end of the year you submit an End of Period Statement and a Final Declaration — confirming your total income and any adjustments. This replaces the traditional Self Assessment return entirely.

Tax2u manages every element of this process on your behalf — from registration through to your annual Final Declaration. You provide your records; we handle the filing, deadlines, and HMRC communication.

📅

4 Quarterly Updates Per Year

Submit a summary of income & expenses every three months. Tax2u handles all four on your behalf.

💻

Compatible Software Required

HMRC mandates HMRC-recognised software. Tax2u sets this up for your business as part of the service.

📝

Final Declaration Replaces SA Return

Your annual Self Assessment return is replaced by a Final Declaration. Tax2u prepares and submits it for you.

⚠

Points-Based Penalty System

Each missed quarterly update earns a penalty point. Tax2u ensures you never miss a deadline.
