HMRC Self Assessment

What is Self Assessment Registration?

Self Assessment registration is the process of telling HMRC that you have income that is not taxed through PAYE — such as self-employment income, rental income, or foreign income. When you register, HMRC creates a Self Assessment record for you and sends you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number by post.

Registration is a one-time process. Once registered, you will need to submit a Self Assessment tax return each year to report your income and pay any tax owed — but that is a separate step handled after registration is complete.

You need to register for Self Assessment if you are:
  • Self-employed as a sole trader
  • A CIS subcontractor in construction
  • A company director
  • Earning rental income over £2,500/yr
  • Earning foreign income
  • A partner in a business partnership
  • Earning savings or investment income not taxed at source
  • Earning over £100,000/yr through PAYE

Registration vs Filing

Self Assessment Registration is not the same as filing a tax return

Many people confuse the two. This page covers registration only — the one-time process of enrolling with HMRC and receiving your UTR number.

This Page
Self Assessment Registration
  • One-time process — done once when you first become self-employed or start receiving untaxed income
  • Tells HMRC you exist and need to report income outside of PAYE
  • Results in HMRC issuing your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number by post
  • Must be completed before you can file your first tax return
  • Tax2U handles this for you via the HMRC agent portal
Separate Service
Self Assessment Filing
  • Annual process — you file a tax return every year after you are registered
  • Reports your income, expenses and tax owed to HMRC for the previous tax year
  • Online filing deadline is 31 January each year
  • Can only be done once you have your UTR number from registration
  • Tax2U offers a separate Self Assessment filing service — see our Self Assessment page
Already registered and need to file? If you already have a UTR number, registration is complete — visit our Self Assessment filing page to get your tax return submitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about Self Assessment Registration

Common questions about registering for Self Assessment — not filing (that's a separate process).

What is Self Assessment registration? ▾
Self Assessment registration is the process of enrolling with HMRC so you can report income that is not taxed at source — such as self-employment income, rental income or foreign income. When you register, HMRC issues you a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number, which you need to file your annual tax return. Registration is a one-time process; filing your tax return happens separately each year after that.
Who needs to register for Self Assessment? ▾
You need to register for Self Assessment if you are self-employed as a sole trader, a CIS subcontractor in the construction industry, a company director, earning rental income of more than £2,500 per year, earning foreign income, earning income from savings or investments not taxed at source, or if your total income from all sources exceeds £100,000 per year. If you are employed and your only income is through PAYE, you generally do not need to register.
When do I need to register for Self Assessment? ▾
HMRC requires you to register for Self Assessment by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you first became self-employed or started receiving untaxed income. For example, if you started self-employment in the 2024–25 tax year (before 5 April 2025), you must register by 5 October 2025. Missing this deadline can result in an automatic £100 late registration penalty from HMRC.
What is the difference between Self Assessment registration and filing? ▾
Self Assessment registration is the one-time process of enrolling with HMRC and receiving your UTR number. Filing — also called submitting a Self Assessment tax return — is the separate annual process of reporting your income and paying any tax owed, which you do every year after registration. You cannot file a tax return until you have registered and received your UTR. This page covers registration only; our Self Assessment filing service is available separately.
Do I need a Government Gateway account to register for Self Assessment? ▾
If you register directly with HMRC, yes — you need to create a Government Gateway account, which involves a multi-step identity verification process that many people find confusing and time-consuming. When you use Tax2U, our HMRC-authorised agents submit your registration through the authorised agent portal on your behalf, so you never need to create a Government Gateway account or call HMRC yourself.
What information do I need to register for Self Assessment? ▾
To register for Self Assessment you need: your full legal name, National Insurance number, date of birth, UK home address, contact details (email and phone), the date you started self-employment or began receiving untaxed income, and a brief description of your trade or income type. Tax2U's short online form collects all of this in under 5 minutes.
What happens after I register for Self Assessment? ▾
Once Tax2U submits your registration to HMRC, HMRC processes it and sends your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) number by post to your registered home address. You will then be enrolled in HMRC's Self Assessment system. Each year after that, HMRC will send you a reminder to file your Self Assessment tax return for the previous tax year, with the online filing deadline of 31 January. Tax2U's filing service can handle those annual returns for you as a separate service.
